A friend shared that she was having a particularly tough day at work. She has devoted her entire adult career to advocating for the rights of children caught up in the machine of child welfare and foster care. I had the pleasure and honor of working with her during my own career as a child advocate. Reading her Facebook post created a visceral response in me. The frustration, anxiety and sadness washed over me as if I were still there fighting the good fight.
It is very difficult to remain hopeful when you work with abused children. It’s difficult to even maintain a belief that good, decent people exist when you are inundated with the darkness that allows an adult to harm a child. However, giving up on children is NOT an option.https://youtu.be/NaZZ4Hmn0BQ
If you know someone who does this kind of work, I ask you to take a moment to tell them they are appreciated. An email, a phone call and gesture large or small. If you really want to show appreciation, join the effort. Here are two links that will help you make a real difference. You'll also discover you get back way more than you give.
